School team, coach on spot, 8-yr-old girl dies during swimming practice

An eight-year-old girl, identified as Riya Kadam, died during swimming practice at the Mengade swimming pool run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Tuesday evening.

A case has been registered at the Warje Malwadi police station.

According to police, Riya, a student of Millennium National School in Karve Nagar, had gone to Mengade swimming pool of PMC along with 35 students from her school for practice.

A teacher, four school employees and a swimming coach were present while the girls were doing swimming practice. Suddenly, Riya started drowning. She was immediately taken out of the swimming pool. But she vomited and became unconscious. After the swimming coach and employees failed to revive her, they took her to a hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

The body has been sent for autopsy. The police are probing the matter.
