In a first-of-its-kind initiative,Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is planning to phase out the least opted subjects by students. Similarly, the board is also planning to cluster some of the subjects so that it can reduce examination period.
We are thinking of phasing out the subjects or clustering them. We will first assess the response to these subjects in the last five years and then take a decision on it. The objective behind clustering the subjects is to reduce exam period and minimise burden on the administration, said Sarjerav Jadhav, chairman,MSBHSE.
The issue of least opted subjects was highlighted when only two students appeared for Russian language paper. As per the rules of the board, the administration still had to set six papers for these two students.
To make matters worse, these two students appeared for the exam in different places, one in Mumbai and the other in Kolhapur.
Jadhav, however, refused to divulge details on how clustering of subjects will be executed and by whom. This year class X examination went on for nearly a month while class XII over a month.
