As actor Sanjay Dutt walks out of jail, his term was marked by controversies over the frequent and long paroles granted to him. While the Pune divisional commissionerate, which looks at pleas from Yerawada Central Jail, Kolhapur jail and Sangli’s Atpadi jail, has maintained that due process was followed in Dutt’s case, over the years, the number of parole applications has dipped.
Pleas for parole are sent to the prison authorities, which are then forwarded to the police stations concerned. Based on their report, the application is accepted. Jail officials say the report from the police station takes long in coming, which may be a reason behind the dipping number of applications. Once the police have sent their report, the prison authorities have to execute the plea within 17 days.
