Defence personnel nabbed a sandalwood thief in the premises of the highly secured College of Medical Engineering in Dapodi, in the early hours of Saturday. However, three of his accomplices managed to flee the spot by jumping into the river in Bopkhel, the police said.
An FIR was lodged at the Bhosari police station on Saturday. As per the press release by Pimpri Chinchwad police, the arrested accused Avinash Shivnath Madhe (20) lives in Akole taluka, Ahmednagar district. The accomplices who fled are identified as Raju Doke, Sushya, and Sachin Gire.
Police have booked the four accused persons under section 303 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police said the accused persons barged into CME premises for stealing sandalwood. “Defence personnel were alert. Upon noticing suspicious movement, they laid a trap and nabbed one of them red-handed,” said havaldar Sachin Garade.
Pieces of sandalwood tree, an axe, a cutter, and other equipment, along with a motorcycle, all worth Rs 58,600 were seized from the accused, the press release stated.
Police said they were hunting for the remaining three who jumped into a river and escaped. A court remanded the accused Madhe to police custody for two days.
