A notice has been sent to St Xaviers Pre-Primary School in Pune Camp for allegedly charging a fee from students admitted under EWS quota under the RTE Act.
An inquiry by K D Bhujbal, extension officer,Zilla Parishad, revealed that the school had taken Rs 18,500 from the students. 101 applications were received of which 80 were termed valid by the school. After further scrutiny,38 were selected for the lottery. A total of 30 were selected in a draw of lots on April 2, said Bhujbal. On April 3,many students deposited the fee of Rs 18,500 at the Catholic Syrian Bank Limited. As per RTE rules,no fee must be charged from students under EWS quota. If found guilty, strict action will be taken against the school, said Bhujbal.
The inquiry report says Rs 2,000 admission fee,Rs 10,800 education cess,Rs 1,800 session fee,Rs 1,000 maintenance fee and Rs 2,900 miscellaneous charges were paid by parents of students admitted under EWS quota. The school apparently told parents they will be reimbursed the fee after the government provides the school funds for admitting students under RTE, said Bhujbal.
The school principal could not be contacted.
