There is chaos over the implementation of Metro project in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad with politicians vying for credit,NGOs opposing the project and common man feeling completely left out.

How is the project going to be implemented without the participation of the common man who is going to travel by the Metro is anybody’s guess.

The funding should not impact the ward level works as people need good basic facilities like roads, drainage and water supply.

The problem of transport in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will not be solved by building a Metro on just one route. There has to be a vision plan for the next 15 years in which multiple routes of the Metro should pass through the city. The total expenditure outlay for this should be considered. The most important issue is how will the PMC/PCMC pay back the loan that the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Metro Rail Corporation take for the project?

After paying the bills, can the PMC/PCMC save money for recurring expenditure? The PMC/PCMC have to repay its share of the capital cost. What is the plan for repayment of this loan? How are the two civic bodies going to raise funds for the project?

A project of this type cannot be accomplished by the efforts of the municipal corporation alone. The state government has to take the lead and the responsibility for such a major investment. We should request the chief minister to take the lead.

Every time there is an effort to improve the city’s public transport, people come up with many issues. Howevr, the main issue remains unsolved. It is high time the state government intervenes and ensures that the Metro project is executed immediately.

The idea of an underground Metro in congested areas, the overall financial model, the comprehensive traffic plan of the city,time-bound completion of the project and alternative options of mass transport. Last but not least, what about the improvement of the existing public transport system?
