A first new generation total knee replacement surgery was successfully performed on a 48-year-old patient Laxmi Mane (name changed) of Jalgaon recently at the Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital in Chinchwad.
Hospital officials said that she was mobilised on the same day in bed and made to walk after all the tubes were removed (2nd post operative day). She travelled to Jalgaon on the 15th post operative day. Her knee flexion at this time was 120 degrees.
My wife was suffering from a severe pain in the knee for the past eight years. When the pain became unbearable,we decided to get a knee replacement surgery done. As we do not have such expert medical facilities in Jalgaon we came to Pune. Birla hospital officials said that the advanced form of 4th generation knee replacement implant called Opetetrak Knee, which the hospital has,is very rare and has been designed by Hospital for Special Surgery of New York,USA,said Laxmis husband.
Dr Kiran Kharat, director and senior consultant in Joint Replacement at ABMH,said I used this implant for my patient because she was only 48 years old. Her bone structure was small and she had very large cysts in the bone. This meant that the implant should be bone conserving. The knee was full of adhesions due to inflammation and past infection and all the cartilage was eroded. I used morsellised (broken into smaller bits) bone graft to reconstruct the defects and implanted a size 1 implant (the smallest in its class).
