University of Pune was hit by protest march on Tuesday as angry students protested against price rise in canteens. The protest took place at Aniket Canteen around 2 pm when a group of 50 students gathered,raised slogans and broke the glass of the canteen door. Manoj Nalawade,owner of the canteen,said,The
rates had been constant for the past three years. This decision was not taken by us. We had asked the university to increase the price. We pay a monthly rent of Rs 35,000 as per the contract for two of the varsity canteens. But with rising prices,it is impossible to continue with the old rates. Vada pav price was raised from Rs 5 to Rs 8 and that of special chai from Rs 7 to Rs 10, he added.
MGNREGA awareness drive from today
PUNE: Pune district will spread awareness regarding implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) from October 2 till the end of the month. According to officials at the district collectorate,awareness rallies and competitions in schools will be organised as part of the programme. Officials will have to ensure that all labourers get the dedicated amount every week.
Kalyani Forge to spend Rs 200 cr on plant upgrade
PUNE: Kalynai Forge,one of the companies founded by the late Dr Neelkant Kalyani,will be investing Rs 200 crore for upgrade and modernisation of its plants. Rohini Kalyani,vice-president and managing director of the company,said the amount would be spent on value addition of the company,especially in modern systems and increasing the tonnage of the forges. The company,which has specialised in cold and small forging,had scored Rs 260 crore as its topline last year. With 75 per cent of its revenues coming from the automotive industry,executive director Viraj Kalyani agreed that slowdown in the industry had affected the company. It has reduced our inventory levels,and we are foraying out into non-automobile sectors, he said. For the quarter ending on June 30,2013,the company had posted a growth of 8.54 per cent. The cost of finance declined to Rs 1.12 crore in the quarter as compared to Rs 1.21 crore.
