Initial information suggests that two engineering students were part of a group of friends on their way for an outing. The two were riding a high end sports bike.
FIVE PERSONS including a police constable and a revenue department official were seriously injured after a rider speeding on a sports bike lost control and hit the two of them standing at a static surveillance team (SST) checkpoint set up by police.
The incident took place around 5 am on Sunday at Manjari Naka on Pune Solapur Highway, where a team from Pune City police was checking vehicles as per mandate of the Model Code of Conduct in the backdrop of upcoming Assembly elections.
The injured government officials have been identified as police constable Ravindra Bartakke and revenue department officials Naresh Gangurde. Other injured persons are Chetan Singh, whose car was being checked at the point, the biker Kartik Dhawale (21), a third year engineering student and Sayali Tinge, also an engineering student, who was riding pillion with Dhawale.
“Initial information suggests that two engineering students were part of a group of friends on their way for an outing. The two were riding a high end sports bike. Initial probe suggests the rider of the bike lost control at high speed, whereby the bike turned on its side and skidded at high speed. Both students riding the bike sustained injuries. The bike hit a person whose car was being checked and two government staffers—a constable and revenue department officer. These three have sustained serious injuries. Constable Bartakke has fractured both legs,” said senior inspector Santosh Pandhare.
He said the biker, who is currently receiving treatment at the hospital, has been booked on charges of rash driving and causing injuries.
