School van driver arrested for sexual abuse of two minor girl students in Pune

The Pune city police have arrested a 45-year-old driver of a school van for allegedly sexually abusing two minor girl students aged around six years. The mother of one of the girls lodged the First Information Report (FIR) in this case at a police station in Pune city on Wednesday.

The police booked the accused on charges of rape under sections 64 (punishment for the crime of rape), 65 (2) (punishment for rape of a woman under 12 years of age) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

On Thursday, some people vandalised the school van. Four people were detained for allegedly damaging the school van, said a senior police officer.

As per the FIR, when the girls were returning home in their school van on September 30, the accused driver allegedly touched their private parts with wrong intentions. One of the girls narrated the incident to her mother.

Her parents informed the school authorities and then approached the police to file a complaint against the van driver. The zonal deputy commissioner of police said the accused was arrested soon after the complaint was lodged. “Further investigation is on,” he said.

Speaking to the media, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnav, also the home minister, said an investigation was underway to determine whether the school authorities were at fault in this case. Fadanvis said that authorities of all schools should verify the backgrounds of staff and drivers.
