Pune rural police provide security to family of Dalit youth murdered in Bhor
Press release also stated that for a fair probe into this case, a police inspector, an assistant inspector, a woman assistant inspector have been appointed in the separate team investigating the case under the supervision of Pankaj Deshmukh, Superintendent of Pune rural police.
A senior police officer said that the probe so far revealed that murder was a fallout of a financial dispute, but further investigation is on.
Police identified the deceased as Vikram Dadasaheb Gaikwad (30) of Utroli village in Bhor taluka of Pune district. His brother Sagar Gaikwad (28), lodged the first information report (FIR) in this case at the Bhor police station on February 9.
As per the FIR, Vikram is a Dalit from the Neo-Buddhist community. The FIR mentions that he went to meet Anuj Chavan (24) of Venavdi village in Bhor on February 8. It is stated that Vikram wanted to take back the money he had given on loan to Anuj who belonged to the Maratha community. It is alleged that during their discussion of money, Anuj attacked Vikram with a sharp weapon, killing him. Police then arrested Ajun on charges of murder, under section 103 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections of the SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Meanwhile, family members of the deceased, along with activists of Ambedkarite organisations, staged a protest claiming that Vikram’s murder was an incident of honour killing because of his marriage with a woman from upper caste. An Assistant Commissioner of Police is probing the case.
A senior police officer said that the probe so far revealed that murder was a fallout of a financial dispute, but further investigation is on. A press release issued by the Pune rural police on Thursday stated that considering the sensitive nature of the crime, police protection has been provided to the family of the deceased.
