Pune rural police prepare for huge footfall during Koregaon Bhima Battle Anniversary

A 4500 strong security deployment over 120 acres of parking spaces, around 380 buses of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML), fire tenders, ambulances and a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will be deployed for the smooth conduct of the anniversary event of the Battle of Koregaon Bhima on January 1 which will see a large number of people pour in from across the state and country.

Constructed by the British government in 1821 in memory of its soldiers who fought against the Peshwas at Koregaon Bhima on January 1, 1818, the Jaystambh, the memorial obelisk, is situated at the Perne village on the Pune–Ahmednagar highway. The district administration, police and other agencies have held several coordination meetings for the anniversary event, which is expected to attract large crowds like every year.

Pune City Police, Pune Rural Police and Pimpri Chinchwad police in coordination with other agencies, have chalked out a detailed plan which will be made at the time of the event.

“The police in coordination with district administration and other key agencies have prepared for the event. We are expecting a number of followers who will visit Jaystambh and surrounding areas, to be over eight lakh. Key traffic diversions have been taken on Pune Ahilyanagari Highway and alternate routes have been earmarked for the same. Around 120 acres of land has been earmarked for vehicles and buses of followers from across and outside Maharashtra who are expected to visit Jaystambh. 380 PMPML buses will ply round the clock from the parking locations to the Perne Phata area to bring and drop back the followers.” said Pankaj Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police of Pune Rural police.

The overall police deployment by Pune Rural police consists of one Superintendent of Police, seven Additional Superintendents of Police, 23 Deputy Superintendents of Police, 306 Police Inspectors, Assistant Inspectors and Sub Inspector, 3080 police personnel, 1500 Home Guard Personnel, 12 companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and seven teams of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS). The district administration has prohibitory orders for Pune Rural jurisdiction, to be effective from midnight on December 30 to midnight on January 2. These orders have been issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. District Collector Suhas Divekar has issued these orders to prevent any disturbances to law and order during the event.

As per the order, during this period, individuals are prohibited from spreading rumors, messages with communal hatred and false information via social media platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp, X, Facebook, and others. Any person found sending, posting, sharing or forwarding such content will be held responsible for their actions.

Additionally, the display of banners, flex boards and hoardings in public places within the Pune Rural jurisdiction without written permission from local authorities or the police department will be prohibited.

The order states that anyone found in violation of these directives will be liable for punishment under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
