Minor Porsche driver was drunk, confirms police probe; ‘Father was aware I was drinking, driving without licence,’ says boy

Two software engineers were killed in the accident in Pune involving a speeding Porsche. The luxury car was allegedly being driven by the minor boy.

Pune police chief, Porsche accident, Pune acccident kills two techiesPolice detained a minor boy, aged 17 and a half years, who was allegedly driving the car.

The Pune police said on Monday the 17-year-old, who was driving the Porsche car when it hit a motorcycle killing two people, had consumed alcohol hours before the accident took place.

The Pune police apprehended the boy, who according to sources in the force is from the family of a prominent Pune realtor, soon after the accident in the Yerwada area in the early hours of Sunday.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told reporters they have evidence, including the CCTV footage from two restaurants, which indicates the boy had been drinking with friends late on Saturday. Kumar also rubbished claims the police were going slow in the case due to pressure.

“I am ready to debate with anyone on this. Generally, in cases of minors, Section 304A is invoked. But considering the heinous nature of the incident, we have invoked Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which deals with culpable homicide. We also tried to get court permission to try him as an adult which was rejected. But will appeal against that in the Session’s Court,” Kumar said.

The Pune police commissioner said the Crime Branch has been tasked to investigate the offences registered against the restaurant which served the boy liquor and the minor’s father who handed him the car.

According to the Pune police, the minor accused has told them his father knew he was consuming liquor. The father has also been booked for allowing his minor son to drive the Porsche and consume liquor.

“Upon inquiry, the minor has said his father had handed over the grey Porsche to him despite knowing that he had no driver’s training and did not have a driver’s licence. He has also said his father allowed him to party with his friends and that his father was aware that he was consuming alcohol,” reads the FIR registered by Assistant Police Inspector Vishwanath Todkari at Yerwada Police Station.

A team of the Crime Branch had visited the school of the minor boy to obtain documents that would ascertain his age, according to sources.

During their investigation into the Porsche accident in Pune, the police found the boy visited two restaurants with a group of about 10-12 friends on Saturday night. They were served liquor including vodka, whiskey, and beer along with food at both restaurants. The police said they have registered an offence against the owners and managers of both restaurants for serving liquor to minors.

Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 24 and software engineers from Madhya Pradesh, were killed in the accident involving the Porsche, which did not have a vehicle registration plate, being driven by the minor boy.
