The traffic control branch of Pune police has caught 261 persons in last four days for driving under the influence of alcohol in a special drive. The drive has been conducted as a part of the Operation Achanak (Sudden) launched by traffic police to take action against offenders.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic control) Vishwas Pandhare said that the drive was conducted between November 14 and November 17 in all parts of the city. Over 3000 people have been fined for drunk driving since January this year. The number was over 4000 last year and about 2500 in 2011.
The drivers and riders were charged under section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Till now fine of Rs 47.22 lakh has been collected these motorists this year,Pandhare said. During the four-day drive the offenders were caught at the main traffic junctions.
As per Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act,if a driver or rider is caught with alcohol content exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml of blood,which is tested by the breath analyser,he or she can be sentenced to simple imprisonment for up to six months. If caught again,the punishment can be up to two years. Pune police currently have 46 breath analysers and are soon going to get 100 more which the traffic control branch had asked for looking at the sharp rise in number of youths found driving under DUI.
