A Pune family that hid their ornaments inside a washing machine before leaving the city to attend a relative’s funeral were in for a shock when they discovered that their house had been broken into and the gold stolen, the police said on Saturday.

The incident took place at a house near the Sachhai Mata temple in the Katraj area of Pune city between 8.30 pm on November 26 and 6 am on November 28, the police said.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged at Ambegaon police station, a 30-year-old man working with a private company, his wife, and their son left their house around 8.30 pm on November 26. The family wanted to attend the funeral of a relative in Latur district.

Before locking the house, the complainant and his wife kept their gold ornaments worth Rs 99,000 in the washing machine to prevent theft, the police said. But when they returned around 6 am on November 28, they found the lock of the main door of their house broken, and the gold ornaments in the washing machine missing.

The police have booked the unknown accused under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 305, 331(3) and 331(4) on charges related to theft and house trespass, and launched a probe headed by Police Sub-Inspector Mohan Kalamkar.
