Pune crime branch takes over probe in Sharad Mohol murder case

Pune Commissioner of Police Retesh Kumaarr confirmed that the probe was handed over to the crime branch on Tuesday.

The crime branch of the Pune city police on Tuesday took over the investigation of the murder of gangster Sharad Mohol, who was shot dead at point blank range in Sutardara area of Pune on January 5.

Pune Commissioner of Police Retesh Kumaarr confirmed that the probe was handed over to the crime branch on Tuesday.

Teams from the Kothrud police station led by senior inspector Hemant Patil, who was till now probing the case, and crime branch held a coordination meeting on Tuesday afternoon as assistant commissioner of police Sunil Tambe was designated the investigation officer. Officials said the case was handed over to the crime branch for assigning a dedicated team and applying inter-jurisdictional approach, specialized skill set and resources towards the investigation.

So far, police have arrested eight people in the case, who are currently in police custody. One of the crucial aspects investigators are looking into is the role of the two practising advocates—Ravindra Vasatrao Pawar (40) of Nandegaon in Mulshi and Sanjay Rambhau Udhan (43) of Bhusari Colony in Kothrud—who are among the eight people arrested in the case.

The six other accused with alleged links to the organised crime have been identified as Sahil alias Munna Santosh Polekar (20) of Sutardara in Kothrud, Namdev Mahipati Kangude (25) of Bhugaon in Mulshi, Amit alias Amar Maruti Kangude (24) of Swrajya Mitra Mandal in Parvati, Chandrakant Shahu Shelke (22) of Janta Vasahat in Parvati, Vinayak Santosh Gavhankar (20) of Paud in Mulshi and Vitthal Kisan Gandhle (34) of Sutardara in Kothrud.

Police said Polekar, Namdev Kangude and Gandhle had a previous dispute with Mohol over money and land dealing. Police suspect they conspired with the other accused, procured firearms and then attacked Mohol with proper planning.
