Mahendra Kamat, the chief contractor of the ill-fated under-construction Park Xpress society, was arrested on Tuesday morning for his alleged role in the slab collapse mishap that led to the death of nine labourers. Six other accused, including the builder, however, continue evade to arrest and are on the run.
On July 29, a slab on the 13th floor of the site had collapsed while 13 labourers were working on it. Most of the victims were from Bihar and West Bengal. Following the accident, Chaturshrungi police had registered cases against 10 people including Arvind Jain, the proprietor of the Park Xpress joint venture.
Till date, police have managed to arrest project in-charge Bhavin Shaha, Dyaneshwar Chavan, architect Santosh Chavan and structural engineer Pradip Kusumkar. Jain, along with Samarth Group proprietor Shravan Agarwal, Kailash Wani of Abhinav Group and Shyam Shende of Mrigyank Group are yet to be arrested.
