The BJP-ruled Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced that it will develop eight underground hawkers’ markets in the city along the lines of New Delhi’s Palika Bazaar to make the roads free of hawkers while providing them alternative business locations.

“To make footpaths free of encroachment, we will develop a hawkers market in Pune like Palika Bazaar in Delhi. There will be parking on top,” said Srinath Bhimale, chairperson of the PMC standing committee.

The PMC will also build a glass bridge in Sarasbaug and a ropeway from Sarasbaug to Parvati to provide easy access to the temples there and promote tourism, he said, adding the development of Shiv Srishti at Chandni Chowk would be taken up soon.

“The Bharat Mandapam at Lohegaon will bring international fame and investment to Pune,” he said.

Bhimale further said a plan would be prepared to conserve Pune’s culture, adding that the city would be established as India’s “book capital”.

The PMC also plans to build globe-like structures at four locations in the city where the latest virtual reality technology will be used to give a space experience.

Bhimale said the PMC would also set up a global capability centre hub, a metropolitan growth hub, and an investor facilitation centre in the city.
