Fellow workers of the people who died in Friday’s building accident said that about a week ago, another worker had lost his life in a similar way when he fell off the topmost floor of another building, which is part of the same housing project.
Police said that although locals had informed them, they are checking the police records to verify if any such an incident was reported a week ago. Residents of Park Xpress Phase One corroborated the fact that a construction worker had died on July 21 (Thursday) at a building adjacent to the one, which saw the death of nine workers on Friday.
Tausif Khan, who works as a craftsman, said that he was working on the fifth floor of the building when he heard that a man had slipped down from the top floor and was hanging mid-way. “We rushed to the top floor to see what had happened. However, by the time we reached, he had fallen to the ground. He died on the spot,” said Khan.
The workers said that they work at high risk. “The safety nets were not good enough. On Thursday, when the man fell off, he tried to hold on to the net but the net was too weak to withstand his weight,” said a worker. The workers said after this incident, the contractor provided them with jackets and helmets.
“All of us are in need of work, hence, nobody told the contractor that we won’t work until the safety measures are met,” said Khan. On Friday too, the safety net tore off.
