A container truck, which was carrying 129 refrigerators from Pune to Puducherry, was stolen from Solapur Highway recently. The theft was followed by a cat and mouse game between police and the thieves, in which the stolen truck and fridges were recovered from Solapur and Parbhani, but the thieves did manage to give police the slip.

The container truck, carrying 129 refrigerators of an international brand, was on its way from Ranjangaon industrial area in Pune district to Puducherry. On the morning of February 27, the driver of the truck, Arvind Kumar Singh, stopped on the road to go to the washroom, and left his keys and cell phone in the truck. When he returned, the truck was gone. He approached the Indapur police station and an offence of theft was registered.

Police started tracking the truck using the cell phone Singh had left behind. The phone was on silent mode and kept in a corner of the vehicle, making it difficult for the suspects to detect.

A team led by Inspector Dhanyakumar Godse of Indapur police station tracked down the truck to a location on Barshi Latur Road in Solapur district in the early hours of February 28. But by the time police reached the truck, the suspects had abandoned it and fled with 30 of the refrigerators. The investigation team found that the suspects had used a smaller tempo truck, and it got a basic description of the vehicle.

Further probe, which involved analysis of CCTV cameras and traditional police work, revealed that the suspects were moving towards Parbhani district. Indapur police then alerted Parbhani district police. By the time police in Parbhani could zero in on them, the suspects had started the process to rent a place to sell off the stolen refrigerators. By the time Parbhani police could track and reach the location on the evening of February 28, the suspects had fled from there too, but had left behind the 30 refrigerators.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Inspector Godse said, “We are working on concrete clues to track down the suspects. All the stolen refrigerators have been recovered.”
