Investigations by Deccan police into complaints of cheating have led to the unearthing of a racket in which more than 25 families of patients,most of them suffering from some chronic ailment,have allegedly been duped by quacks to the tune of Rs 25 lakh. Till now the police have arrested — Yallappa Durgappa Vaidu alias Y D Vaidya (42),one Ravi Shinde and his wife. Deccan police started probing the matter in detail after the name of Y D Vaidya surfaced in two cases.
In one of the cases,a 32-year-old man from Phursungi was allegeldy duped of Rs 85,000. They promised him in January this year that his two-year-old son,who could not hold his neck,would be cured with their medicines. They kept asking him to buy herbal medicines worth Rs 85,000 for over three months.
Investigating officer S A Dendage said,“The trio later closed their shop on Bhandarkar and fled. The family members of the baby approached us with a complaint. Investigations revealed that we had recently arrested the suspects in a similar case.”
Dendage said,“It has now come to light that these people used to approach relatives of patients with chronic diseases outside hospital premises and assure them of a cure. As of now we have names of five people who have been duped by the trio. As per the primary information not less than 25 families of patients have been duped to the tune of Rs 25 lakh. They used to open small clinics and shut them after making enough money. We now know that Ravi Shinde and wife used different names to cheat people.” Police have appealed to people to approach Deccan police station or police control room with any information on similar cases.
