City-based private bus transporters’ union is all set to increase fares by 25 per cent from September 1.

“The diesel prices are going up constantly and we too have decided to increase our fares. The government has also increased taxes and fees for various permits required for the buses,” said Janardan Murkute,President,Pune Bus Owners Association (PBOA).

There are as many as

10,600 private buses in the city. “The 17-seater bus will charge Rs 16 per km instead of Rs 14. The 32-seater bus will charge Rs 28 per km instead of Rs 25 and 35-seater bus Rs 30 instead of Rs 27 per km. A 45-seater bus will charge Rs 38 per km instead of Rs 30 and a 50-seater bus Rs 40 per km in place of Rs 32 ,” said Murkute.

He said diesel prices are set to increase by over Rs 3 again. “Once that happens,we will also increase the fares of contract buses used to ferry employees of several IT companies,”

The union members also demanded they be provided pick-up spots and parking facilities.

“The proposal seeking pick-up spots is still pending with the civic body. The civic body is denying pick-up spots inside the city. All we want is pick up spots at Yerawada,Balaji Nagar,Aundh and Kothrud,” said Murkute.

“The civic body has agreed to provide us old octroi posts for parking but we are ready to rent it only if they develop that area,” he added.
