JUBILATING AFTER being ranked second on the top 20 list of cities declared by the Centre to be developed as smart cities, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to rope in Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the brand ambassador of Smart Pune.
“We have written to cricketer MS Dhoni to be brand ambassador of Smart Pune. The reply is awaited,” said municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar.
In a letter to the Indian cricket captain, the municipal chief has congratulated Dhoni for becoming part of the Pune franchise, Rising Pune Supergiants (RPSG), for the Indian Premier League (IPL). Recently, Dhoni was named as the captain of the newly-formed Pune franchise team for IPL.
A civic official said cricket is the most popular sport in the country. “Dhoni is now the captain of Pune franchise team for IPL. There cannot be a better fit as brand ambassador for Smart Pune,” he said.
On the other hand, the PMC is geared up to take assistance of the United Kingdom government for developing Pune as smart city. “The UK government will be providing financial and technical assistance to Pune for developing smart city. They will mainly help in Information Technology and Public Transport sector,” said Anil Pawar, deputy municipal commissioner.
He said the UK government has invited civic officials and elected representatives to experience the development of cities in UK. “The PMC will soon start coordinating with the representatives of the UK government to seek their assistance in developing smart city,” Pawar said.
