The general body meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday witnessed a furore over the rabid dogs in the city. In protest of the menace of the rabid dogs Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporators brought dogs in the meeting hall, albeit not the real dogs but the soft toys of the dogs.
Since these corporators did not get an opportunity to express their views on the subject, they tried to protest in front of mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale. However,no concrete answer came from the civic administration on the issue of controlling the rabid dogs.
Immediately after the meeting started on Tuesday,MNS corporators came forward holding placards and soft models of dogs protesting against the civic administrations apathy towards the attacks by rabid dogs on innocent people. Rajendra Gorde said,The incidents of dog attacks are on rise. Lately, people from small children to old ones had to suffer from dog bites and yet the civic administration is not taking any proactive steps to curb the menace.
However, mayor did not allow them to speak. Agitated by this, the MNS corporators including Gorde,Kishor Shinde,Ravindra Dhangekar,Vasant More,Rajendra Vagaskar came forward and sat on the floor before the mayor.
Calling this a media stunt,NCP corporator Dilip Barate asked them to go and occupy their seats. However, continuing the debate,BJP corporator Ujwal Keskar asked if the medical department of the civic body had a sufficient stock of anti-rabies vaccines. He further asked,Even though the Blue Cross Society has been handed over the task of controlling the dog population through vasectomy operations, the number of stray dogs has hardly reduced, he said.
MNS corporators went to their respective seats only after Anil Bhosale promised them to give proper budgetary allocations in the budget. All the party heads will discuss the issue and give adequate budgetary amount to solve the issue, he said.
However, civic administration was allowed to have its say on the issue.
