Civic admin seeks 18.25 TMC from Oct 15 to July 15 next year

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the irrigation department are yet again set to lock horns over drinking water supply to the city with the civic administration seeking 18.25 TMC to meet the demand from October 15 to July 15 next year.

With no consensus on water managment in a recentl meeting, the PMC has written to the irrigation department that the planning for water supply management is done on the basis of storage in the chain of dams supplying water to the city. “Thus, the planning for water supply should be from October 15,day in which there is monsoon retrieval to July 15 next year, the start of monsoon,” it said.

The PMC has asked the irrigation department to allocate 1.25 TMC every month for the period which will be 11.25 TMC for nine months and it should be after excluding 2.25 TMC lost through leakages and 1.75 TMC through evaporation in canals.

However, the irrigation department has objected to the civic administration saying the supply of 11.60 TMC reserve to meet the demand of city is for the entire year. “The PMC has already lifted 3.875 TMC from July 1 to October 10,” the irrigation department office said adding it meant 1,150 MLD water was lifted by the PMC every day. The water supply per person per day provided by PMC is 289 litre against the norm of 150 litre,he added.

A PMC officials said the civic body has communicated its demand with a detailed explaination to the irrigation department and the calculation done by irrigation department for the water management was incorrect.
