The Pune Municipal Corporation’s failure to clear and repair footpaths for pedestrians, seems to have invited the state government’s ire. The urban development department has now decided to review the work on footpaths at a meeting with all those in charge of ward offices later this week.

Last month, the state government had issued directives to the PMC for repairing footpaths and removing encroachments to make them pedestrian-friendly. The civic administration undertook work but it has been struggling to clear the foothpaths for public use.

Principal Secretary T C Benjamin said,“I have decided to call a meeting of all those in charge of the 14 ward offices of the PMC on Saturday to review the work.”

“The repair work is on and will be completed soon. It will be easier to remove hurdles if the citizens inform us about them,” said additional city engineer Pramod Nirbhavane.

He said the major issue is of encroachments, which would take big action and longer time.

“The real condition of footpaths came to light after the directives from the state government. The survey has revealed that there are large number of illegal encroachments on the footpaths,” Nirbhavane said.

The number of encroachments of MSEB owing to electrical lines and feed pillars is in large number and the civic administration has asked the power utility to shift them from footpath,he added.

The city has 1,850 km of roads including 90 km of concrete road. The concrete road has footpaths on both sides. In all,930 km road have footpaths on both sides and the total length of footpaths is 1,860 km.

There are as many as 1,970 feeder pillars and transformers on footpaths. The number of electric poles on footpaths is 5,747 and waterline valves are in place at 155 locations. Electric or telephone cables are being laid at 477 locations while there are 334 PMPML bus stops on footpaths.
