The unopposed elections of candidates in Municipal Corporation polls that became a topic of debate, seems to have its impact on voters of the ward in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) from where two BJP candidates were elected unopposed after withdrawal of candidature by rivals. The ward  witnessed a low turnout today of 48.66 percent with less than half of the voters staying away from voting.

In ward 35 Suncity-Manikbaug, BJP candidates Manjusha Nagpure and Shrikant Jagtap were elected unopposed after their opponents withdrew from the fray on the last day of withdrawal of candidature. A total of four corporators of four different categories were to be elected from the ward as per the state government decision to elect four corporators from a ward in PMC.

Of the 70,018 voters in the ward, 34,068 exercised their right to vote and elect the candidates from two subcategories. A total of 18,003 male and 16,068 female voters of the ward participated in the election. However, the state election commission has sought a detailed report as per the rules to ascertain if there was no wrongdoing or pressuring of rivals.

The BJP had celebrated the unopposed election of two of its candidates to the PMC saying that the opponents withdrew fearing possible humiliation they would face after defeat. However, the rivals NCP-NCP(SP) alliance, Congress-Shiv Sena(UBT) along with MNS had criticised the unopposed election, alleging use of money and muscle power by BJP to get the opponents to withdraw from the fray.

On January 15, voters of Suncity-Manikbaug ward were to elect only two candidates as two candidates from separate subcategory were elected unopposed. “We wanted all the four BJP candidates to get unopposed elected to PMC from the ward but we were a bit late to plan a strategy for the same,” said a BJP leader.

On the criticism of BJP for the unopposed election of candidates, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said that this kind of trend existed in the rule of Congress as well and the unopposed election of BJP candidates shows the confidence of voters in the party.
