The PMC education board initiative of organising picnics and study tours for civic school students has come under a cloud with civic activists alleging corruption in appointment of a travel agency for a recent picnic.
The picnic was allegedly organised in a hurry and during examination time only to ensure budgetary allocation supposed be utilised by the end of the fiscal on March 31 does not lapse. This is exam time and summer has begun. It was wrong to organise the picnic now, said civic activist Vivek Velankar.
The school board selecting a water park for the picnic was also not right, said activist Vijay Kumbhar. The picnic spot selected was a commercial place run by politicians. Also, the board has paid an exorbitant amount for travel, he alleged and demanded an inquiry.
A contractor who had offered a lower amount for the travel of students pointed out that the education board gave the job to a travel company that charged higher. We had charged the lowest but were pressured to give way to another company that charged more, said Rajendra Gaikwad of Green City.
Education board chairman Baba Dhumal said the board has carried out the entire procedure as per directions of the civic administration and there was nothing wrong in either the appointment of the travel firm selection or the selection of the picnic spot.
