A DAY after Mayor Prashant Jagtap urged citizens to launch a public movement against the civic administration for allowing road-digging across the city despite directions to stop them, Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar said road-digging to lay telecommunication cables and gas pipeline would continue till April-end as permission was given after recovering charges.
“Permission for digging roads is given to utility service providers for which cables are laid by telecommunication companies and gas pipeline by a petroleum company. If there is little violation by these private companies in digging roads, all of them cannot be made to suffer by stopping their work,” said Kumar.
Road-digging work would continue till April-end, Kumar said, adding that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) would undertake repair work from May onwards. There were efforts to ensure that the telecommunication and petroleum companies carry out road-digging simultaneously on the same road, Kumar said, adding that lack of coordination between the private companies did not yield the desired results. He further said that the civic administration would initiate action against those digging roads without permission.
