PIMPRI-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is partially demolishing a 100-year-old bund located across the Pavana river near a military dairy farm in Pimpri. The main objective of the demolition drive is to desilt the river, which supplies water to around 18 lakh people in the industrial town.
Sanjay Kulkarni, executive engineer of the environment department of PCMC,said the civic body will be demolishing two bunds one at the military farm and the other at Sangvi. The one in Pimpri will be demolished partially while the other at Sangvi will be completely demolished, he said. Kulkarni said the bund in Pimpri was built in around 1918. It does not have gates. It was apparently built for irrigation purposes, but it is no longer being used for irrigation purposes and that is why PCMC has started partially demolishing it. We will fix automatic gates, he said. Officials said it will take at least a week to complete the drive.
It was difficult to clean up the bund area. The silt flowed in the river and remained deposited in the bund, Kulkarni said. The Pimpri Military Dairy Farm came into existence over 50 years ago. Farm land adjacent to Pavana was acquired by the defence establishments.
