Pavana dam, the main source of water supply for Pimpri-Chinchwad, has been filled up to 58 per cent of its capacity by Wednesday afternoon following incessant rain in Maval taluka of Pune district.

The storage level in the dam had dropped to 17 per cent in June and civic body was considering initiating water cuts. However after it started raining in this month, the civic administration decided against initiating any cuts.

Civic officials said the storage is adequate to care of the city’s drinking water needs for next six months. “If it continues to rain like this, we might see the dam rising to its full capacity in next few days,” officials said.

By 6 am on Wednesday, the Pavana dam had received 145 mm rain. Last year, by July 24, the dam had received 1,342 mm rain but this year so far, it has received 1,355 rain.

Meanwhile, civic officials said the city witnessed six incidents of tree felling but no loss of life was reported.
