Dayanand Bhaurao Patil (34),the only person injured in the low-intensity serial blasts on J M Road on August 1,2012,has been made a witness in the case as investigators did not find his involvement in the terror attack.

As per the chargesheeet filed by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS),Patil said in his statement that he picked up the explosive-laden packet unknowingly along with his bag kept at Balgandharva Chowk, after watching the agitation to support Anna Hazare’s hunger strike around 7.15 pm on August 1.

However, investigators thoroughly probed whether he had any role in the terror act,as certain points in his statement needed verification. According to Patil,a native of Bidar in Karnataka,he had shifted to Mumbai to help his brother-in-law in his tailoring business. In 2001,he got his passport. In 2003,he went to Jordan, where he was offered a tailoring job. In Jordan,Patil worked with a tailoring firm owned by a Pakistani man on a monthly salary of Rs 7,000. As the salary was less,he returned to Mumbai in 2004. Patil’s statement also said Sunnat (an Islamic ritual) had been done on his private parts, but he was not sure if his parents had got it done in his childhood. Investigators suspect that it could be due to a medical problem.

Investigators, including a National Investigative Agency (NIA) team, went to Patil’s native place and questioned many people who knew him. Investigation confirmed that he never converted to Islam, was not influenced by any radical elements and had no links with the J M Road blasts conspiracy, said sources.

In his statement,Patil said he got married in 2009 and later shifted to Pune. He lived in Uralikanchan and took some space outside a laundry shop in Deccan area on a rent of Rs 1,000 per month for tailoring work. He would to come to Pune daily from Uralikanchan by train or bus. After work,he would walk to the Pune railway station to take a train back home. He used to bring his lunch and a water can of 10 litres. Due to water shortage in Uralikanchan,he used to take home water from the railway station in this can everyday.

On August 1,Patil said,he left his workplace at 7 pm and was walking towards the station when the explosion occurred. “I was carrying a cloth bag containing my lunch box and the can. On reaching Balgandharva,I saw 50-odd people shouting slogans in support of Anna Hazare’s hunger strike in Delhi. I left my bag on the compound wall near Balgandharva police chowki and watched them. When I had kept the bag, there was nothing else around it. After five minutes,I lifted my bag and left as I did not wanted to miss the train. After walking 10 to 15 metres,I realised my bag was heavier than before. I found myself carrying another plastic bag along with my bag. I lifted the bag to see what was inside, but it exploded…” he said in his statement.

Patil sustained injuries on his face and stomach and was taken to Sassoon Hospital. The ATS said people who knew him described him as a poor, simple and polite man.

ATS has so far arrested eight persons in this case. They are Imran Khan Wajid Pathan of Nanded,Irfan Landge,Aslam Shaikh alias Banti Jahagirdar of Ahmednagar,Asad Khan,Sayyed Aarif alias Kaashif Sayyed Jafaruddin Biyabani of Aurangabad ,Firoz alias Humza Abdul Hameed Sayyed,Munib Memon and Farooq Bagwan from Pune. Indian Mujahideen operatives Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal, their aides Shakir alias Asadullah Akhtar and Ahmed alias Wakas, and LeT operative Fayyaz Kagzi are wanted in the case.

According to the ATS,Feroz,Ahmed and Shakir had planted six bombs (three in bicycle carriers) at different spots on J M Road,to avenge the murder of terror suspect Qateel Siddiqui in Yerawada jail. While five bombs exploded between 7.30 pm and 11.30 pm,one was later defused. It is suspected that the bomb that exploded in Patil’s hand had been planted by Ahmed.
