The police in Pimpri-Chinchwad have put in place an elaborate security cover comprising 1,100 personnel and officers for a multi-layer security at the Maharashtra Cricket Association’s stadium in Gahunje for the five World Cup cricket matches first of which was played on Thursday.

“A detailed plan for the security has been prepared through coordination with the Maharashtra Cricket Association office-bearers. A thorough security sweep of the stadium and surrounding areas has been done in the run-up to the matches,” Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choube told The Indian Express.

The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) International Stadium at Gahunje, 25 km from Pune, will host five matches in the ICC men’s 50-over World Cup 2023.

Officials said the security cover comprises three deputy commissioners of police, six assistant commissioners of police, 30 inspectors, 80 assistant inspectors and sub-inspectors, 814 personnel and 170 officers and personnel of the bomb detection and disposal squads. These include additional strength of the state reserve police force and quick response teams. The police said multiple layers of security led by senior officers have been deployed at entry points of the stadium, access roads, and parking bays, and one layer will be deployed inside the stadium, including dedicated teams for each of the 11 stands of the stadium. “A large number of fans would mean many vehicles coming to the stadium. A dedicated team will coordinate traffic flow with the stadium authorities,” Choubey said.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad police said the state cricket body will be charged as per the government norms on paid security.
