This panel has been constituted by merging four electoral wards including No 57 Shankarrao More Vidyalaya represented by Congress corporator Deepak Mankar,15 per cent of ward 58 — Rambaug Colony represented by Shiv Sena’s Surekha Pansare,15 per cent of ward 65 — Ideal Colony represented by BJP’s Murlidhar Mohol and about five per cent of ward 56 — Law College represented by BJP’s Vikas Mathkari.
The area has seen the domination of saffron parties from 1990 after Shashikant Sutar and his wife were elected as corporators. Even today,Mankar is the only Congress corporator in the area mainly dominated by the BJP and Shiv Sena. “We now plan to get at least 11 to 12 Congress corporators from this area and rock the saffron parties’ domination,” Mankar said. Mankar had beaten BJP candidate Tukaram Jadhav in the last elections. It was only recently that Jadhav had joined the Congress.
The panel is reserved for open (women) and open category candidates. According to Mankar, with 50 per cent reservation for women, every panel will have a women representative. “While it will definitely change the panel’s profile,it will have little adverse repercussions on Congress’ hold in the area,” he said.
The sitting corporators said that a slum rehabilitation project is underway at survey number 44. A gymnasium and a hospital have also been constructed in the area recently. However, the Shivsrushti on the 100 acres, including 28 acre land that was earlier used for Kothrud garbage depot — is the largest project currently underway in this area. A metro rail station is also proposed close to the Shivsrushti.
