Old Pune-Mumbai Highway: Two killed, 2 injured as trailers collide

An official said that the driver and the helper in the first trailer died on the spot. The two have been identified as Shahbaz Kaleem (24) and Feroz Shaikh (25), both natives of Karnataka.

TWO PERSONS were killed while two others were severely injured as two trailers collided on Old Pune-Mumbai Highway, near Kamshet, early on Sunday. The incident led to an over four-hour traffic congestion on both the corridors of the highway. According to Kamshet police under Pune rural police, the accident took place around 12.30 am on Sunday, when a Mumbai-bound trailer went out of control of the driver and crossed over the median on the Old Highway, to hit another trailer moving towards Pune. While the first trailer turned on its side, the front cabin of the second one was damaged.

An official said that the driver and the helper in the first trailer died on the spot. The two have been identified as Shahbaz Kaleem (24) and Feroz Shaikh (25), both natives of Karnataka.

The driver and helper in the other trailer, who have been identified as Shrimahan Singh and Birendra Singh, sustained severe injuries and are under treatment.

Station Duty Officer at Kamshet police station said, “The trailers had blocked both the corridors of the highway. As the accident took place in the Ghat section, the traffic was affected. The IRB personnel managed to take the cranes to the spot after navigating through the long lines of traffic. Both the trailers could only be moved off the road around 4.30 am. The long lines of vehicles went on for several kilometers, till the points of diversions.”
