The Pune Police crime branch has arrested the leader of a gang of burglars from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, who used to travel by air with his accomplices and targeted flats in posh areas of Pune, Mumbai and Thane. The probe has revealed the involvement of the gang in over 150 house break-ins, including 18 at a housing society in Wakad in one day.

Sleuths from crime branch unit-III got a tip-off about Mushtaq Qureshi alias Sherkhan alias Babli Chaudhari when they were probing some leads in the series of break-ins in housing societies in Wakad and Bavdhan. They got to know that the modus operandi of suspects involved in the incidents in Wakad was similar to that of some burglars in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. A crime branch team was sent to Uttar Pradesh to trace the leads, which led to the arrest of Sherkhan on Sunday.

Police inspector Sunil Pawar of the Unit III said, “Sherkhan’s interrogation revealed that he and his accomplice, Nadim Yusuf Bangali alias Kapil, used to come to Mumbai from Delhi by air and stayed in hotels in Lonavala or Navi Mumbai. This stay used to be for eight days at a stretch. Another accomplice Dharam Giri used to drive down to meet them from Ghaziabad in a car. Then they used to target flats in posh areas in Pune, Thane and Mumbai.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Bansode said, “They used to burgle houses between 11 am and 3 pm. The gang members gained entry after parking their vehicles outside the societies. They hid the metal bars and tools in their clothes, leaving no room for suspicion. Then they broke into flats and fled with the booty hidden in their clothes. Then they went back and sold the stolen items in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.” As many as 130 offences are registered against the gang, including two murders.
Police have now launched a search for the other two gang members.
