The city traffic police fined about 800-1000 people in the last two days for not fastening their seat belts while driving. “We have collected more than Rs 1.5 lakh in fine, till about 6.30 pm on Monday evening,” said DCP Traffic Manoj Patil. He said that many of those fined had also been booked under other offences. “While we fine a person for not wearing seat belts,we also conduct a thorough enquiry — check licence, vehicle papers,PUC certificate. In many cases, people are also fined for other lapses,” Patil said. Meanwhile, the police have also taken a decision to ask schools to allow parking in their grounds. “Schools do not allow vehicles to be parked within their premises because they think their grounds will be spoiled. If the schools allow parking in the school grounds,it will reduce congestion outside the schools,” he said. He said that about 500 schools across the city had been identified and that discussions would be taken in the next few months over how to go about it.
