Kondhwa police arrested a Nigerian national,a BCA student at Arihant College, for allegedly possessing and trying to circulate fake Indian currency. Police have identified the suspect as Carl Joseph Astusz (23),residing at Manikchand Malbar,Lulla Nagar.

Offence in the case was registered by Hrishikesh Randhir, hotel manager of Chai at Vihar Road. ACP S G Thopte, the investigation officer, said Carl went to the hotel on Friday evening and made a bill of Rs 240. “He gave an Indian currency note of Rs 1,000. Chai was suspicious and got the note checked on a fake currency detector machine at a petrol pump. It was confirmed that currency note was fake and police was called,” Thopte said. “We have seized the fake note that the Nigerian national was trying to circulate. He said he got the note from an auto rickshaw driver, which is hard to believe. So we arrested him under Section 489 (b)(c) of the IPC,” he said.

The officer said no more fake notes were found in his possession. He was produced before the Cantonment court on Saturday and remanded in police custody till March 20. Investigation is on to confirm how he got the fake note, his intention behind circulation of fake currency and if he is associated with any racket.

Police said Carl came to Pune four years ago on a student visa. “His visa documents are genuine, but his residential permit expired about one and a half month before. We got information that he is now residing at Lulla Nagar and was earlier staying at different place. Earlier, his roommates were held in connection with Narcotics trade,” police said.
