The May 12 Government Resolution offering at least 25 per cent more compensation to land owners than what was envisaged in the central land acquisition Act of 2013 will help speed up at least 1,000 pending cases of land acquisition in Pune, say district officials.
Most of these cases involve land acquisition for highways, rehabilitation of farmers, irrigation canals and roads, say officials.
“These cases have been stuck for over a year. The new GR will help us to speed up these cases,” said a senior official dealing with land acquisition.
The new GR issued by the state government will enable officials to negotiate directly with the land owners for buying land for government projects. The compensation package would be decided by a district-level committee headed by the district collector and having five other members.
Officials say this will substantially cut delays that most cases of land acquisition involve. “There were several projects in which the compensation amount had to be hiked after the acquisition following demands from the land owners with the rising market prices. However, now, dealing directly with the land owners will help both sides to settle the amount finally and clear decks for the project,” another official said.
Under the new GR, land owners will either be paid the whole amount upfront or half the amount upfront and the rest in installments.
Also, there are separate directives for irrigation and other development projects. For irrigation projects, the state has allowed officials to buy small tracts of land from farmers. For government projects, land has to be bought in parcels.
