Union Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel on Thursday said that for sustained economic growth, the city needs an international airport not just from the industries point of view but also for agricultural growth.
Speaking at the 78th annual general meeting of Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA),Patel said,If Pune has to come up as an economic model, air connectivity is most important. A new international airport, either by the government or the private sector, must come up soon in the city. He said Maharashtra used to be a premier state for everything a few decades ago. Today, other states are catching up. Maharashtra needs to increase its pace of development, he said.
Patel lamented that it has become increasingly difficult in the government to arrive at a consensus. Today, without debating whether a proposal is good or bad for the nation, opposition parties blatantly oppose it just because it is tabled by the ruling party. It has become impossible to get absolute majority to come to power, he said.
Speaking about the younger generation,Patel said they are a frustrated lot as they are either unemployed or under-employed. Those who have jobs are under-employed earning much less than their capability or doing work which is not at par with their potential, he said.
Managing director of Synergy Emulsifuel Private Limited,S K Jain, who took over as the new president of MCCIA said he would focus and follow-up on five issues related to the city – independent civil international airport for transport, independent civil cargo air terminal, upgradation of facilities at existing civil airport,a world class business centre in Moshi and issues of octroi and mathadi labourers.
