Inaugurating a statue of Maratha warrior Shivaji on the NDA campus,NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said the values and principles of the Maratha king should inspire NDA cadets and he recalled how the Maratha king had ensured that his soldiers never committed atrocities on women or damaged any farmland.

“There was a drought during Shivaji’s reign but it was handled effectively. We are talking of food security bill now but this concept was implemented by Shivaji to ensure every citizen gets sufficient food,” he said.

Each NDA cadet should be inspired by Shivaji, said Pawar adding that the statue will not only inspire them to hone their skills of warfare but also remind them of how a leader or administrator should behave.

Earlier, deputy mayor Deepak Mankar urged Pawar to resolve the issue of developing a memorial in Kothrud where the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has proposed a station for the Pune metro.

NDA commandant Air Marshal K S Gill said the PMC initiative to set up the statue of Shivaji at NDA was commendable as it would inspire cadets.

Elected representatives of the MNS,Shiv Sena,BJP and Congress stayed away from the function. There was a good presence of NCP corporators.
