National Institute of Virology ready to test swine flu samples

The National Institute of Virology in Pune has expressed its readiness to test samples of swine flu in the event of an outbreak in the country.

The National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune has expressed its readiness to test samples of swine flu in the event of an outbreak in the country. Officials at NIV said that they were given instructions to step up the preparedness at their laboratory.

After SARS and H5N1 bird flu,the recent swine flu outbreak that killed 103 people in Mexico has led to a fear of a possible pandemic.

NIV officials who have tested bird flu samples said that they had the equipment and diagnostics to conduct tests.

When contacted in New Delhi,Dr V M Katoch,Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) told The Indian Express that laboratories across the country have been alerted.

“Our machinery was already in place following the outbreak of SARS and Avian flu. We have now told the same doctors to quarantine those people with symptoms of swine flu,” Katoch said.
