The road leading from Nagpur Chawl to Pune International Airport will be widened from the current 12 metres to 24 metres, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Muralidhar Mohol announced on Tuesday through a press release.

Although no timeline has been given for this road widening, the announcement said that the new road will include pedestrian friendly paths and seating, trees, fountains, and paintings and sculptures related to Pune’s heritage. The road will soon be constructed using Corporate Social Responsibility funds, said the release.

The Nagpur Chawl is around 2 kms away from the Pune Airport. This road, along with the New Airport road, forms two of the main roads that connect the city to the airport. The road from Nagpur Chawl to the airport is owned by the Air Force and private owners. The widening of the road was delayed due to delays in land acquisition by the Air Force, the release stated.

The Pune Airport in Lohegaon sees around 200-225 flights every day and its annual passenger mark has crossed over 1 crore. Both of these roads leading up to the airport see frequent traffic jams due to surging air traffic. Viman Nagar, having two campuses of Symbiosis International University, also sees an influx of a large student population, further adding to traffic stress on its roads due to private vehicles.

Mohol said, “The first and last reflection of Pune in the minds of travelers is the picture they see when coming to and going from the airport. This road is being developed with a view to making them feel delighted while coming to Pune, help them know the city, and leaving a lasting impression of the city’s rich heritage, culture, tradition, and facilities. This work will begin soon. This road will become the new identity of Pune.”
