Once again it’s that time of the year when Pune,is all geared up to host the awaited Vasantotsav, the annual cultural extravaganza organised by the Vasantrao Deshpande Pratishthan. Rahul Deshpande carries forward the legacy of his grandfather, the legendary classical vocalist,Vasantrao Deshpande, through the fest. Vasantotsav was hosted for the first time in Mumbai in 2007 to mark the 25th death anniversary of Vasantrao Deshpande.

As Pt Bhimsen Joshi has rightly commented,“ Vasantrao was a versatile vocalist. His command over laya, tawa and sur,was amazing”. Vasantrao Deshpande was India’s most illustrious classical vocalist. The scale of his versatility challenged all bounds of imagination. He was a man who was able to handle all forms of music with awe-inspiring ease. He was an academician in his own right and was truly a genius when it came to classical music.

Rahul Deshpande believes that the journey of a true musician never ends. Hence,he started Vasantotsav,a grand musical gathering, which was first held in 2007 marking the 25th death anniversary of Vasantrao Deshpande,at Mumbai. For the second time the event was held at Pune in 2008.

This year,Pune will host Vasantotav for the second time in a row. The fest begins on January 9 and will conclude on January 11 at the Law College grounds. In addition, for the first time, the show will witness the Panchatatva- a Jugalbandi between the flute, tabla, sitar, drums, pakhwaj and vocalists.

On January 9,there will be a performance by Rahul Deshpande, and Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Dr L Subramanium. The second day of the event will witness winners of Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa,Lil’ Champs enthralling the audience. Ustad Shahid Parvez will play the sitar. The last and the final day will host the Panchatatva, with Rakesh Chaurasia on the flute,Niladri Kumar on the sitar,Vijay Ghate on the tabla,Jino Banks on drums and Bhavani Shankar on pakhwaj and Rahul Deshpande on vocals.
