Mumbai Suburbs boys,Pune girls shine in athletics meet

Athletes of Mumbai Suburbs dominated the proceedings in the Under-14 boys section at the Maharashtra State Athletics Championship at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi,finishing with a haul of six medals in all events on Saturday.

Athletes of Mumbai Suburbs dominated the proceedings in the Under-14 boys section at the Maharashtra State Athletics Championship at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi,finishing with a haul of six medals in all events on Saturday.

Diptesh Uttekar was the main contributor to this tally,capturing the bronze in the 100-metre run as well as the long jump. The 600-metre run saw two Suburbs athletes finish on the podium,with Nitesh Singh and Tej Bid securing the gold and the bronze respectively. The Suburbs team dominated the proceedings at the high jump as well with Anil Sahu jumping 1.69 metres for gold,while his teammate Melroy Fernandes finished a close second with a jump of 1.56 metres.

Abhijit Singh of Nashik was another notable performer,following up his silver medal in the long jump with a gold in the shot put event. The home team did not have a good outing in this group with none of the Pune contestants winning a medal in any event.

In the Under-14 girls section,however,the city athletes proved their mettle with medal-worthy performances in all events.

Juilee Badhe was the pick of Puneites,capturing the coveted gold in the triathlon,while her teammate Sonali Kulkarni was the silver medallist in the same event. Badhe’s second gold came in the high jump,where she jumped 1.50 metres high. The city gained a few silver medals through Lata Adhe,Satya Hallakeri and Charushila

Chinchkar,who finished second in the long jump,600-metre run and shot put respectively. Ankita Gosavi’s bronze in the 100-metre run capped off a fine performance by the Pune girls.
