After being on halt for almost a fortnight, monsoon again started progessing on Monday with a red alert issued for the ghat areas of Pune for the next 48 hours as they are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said monsoon has now advanced to cover most parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, parts of Gujarat, Arabian Sea, some parts of Chhatishgarh and Madhya Pradesh. This movement has come after a long halt of the monsoon with the northern limit lying over Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar).
However, Pune and its surrounding regions had already received more than the month’s quota of rainfall due to the intense spells of showers received in the first few days of the monsoon. This year, monsoon arrived 14 days ahead of its normal schedule of June 10.
In the 24 hours spanning from 8:30am on Sunday till 8:30 am Monday, ghat areas of the district received intense spells of rainfall. Lonavala recorded 123mm of rainfall that has led the Bhushi dam to overflow.
On Sunday, the steel bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed in Talegaon Dabhade, killing four people. Almost all rivers and waterbodies in the district have reported a good rise in water volume. Till Monday evening, Shivajinagar reported 26.2mm rain while Koregaon Park reported 26.7mm.
The IMD has predicted that Pune and its surrounding regions would get light to moderate rainfall for the next seven days. Most parts of the city reported rainfall on Monday but there was minimal waterlogging.
