Mixed reaction to proposed fare hike

After a series of populist rail budgets, there are indications from Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi of a probable fare hike in this year’s Railway Budget. According to Railway Pravasi Sangh, the fare hike is necessary to increase the railway revenue as there hasn’t been any hike for the past eight years. “Prices have gone up everywhere. If the railway hikes its fares to a certain extent and also improves facilities,it’s acceptable,” said Sangram Bhau Tupe,42,a resident of Shivajainagar who travels frequently between Pune and Surat.

However, many others are opposing the proposed hike. Manjulata Mehta, chairman of a railway commuter group, said a fare hike would be an additional pressure on citizens who are already being burdened by inflation.

“A fare hike can’t be justified at this moment. Today,a large chunk of the family earnings is being spent on basic necessities such as food, house and health. A fare hike in the Railway Budget would make the life of the common man more difficult,” said Mehta.
