A missing senior citizen was found dead in the duct of the lift of an apartment in Bhavani Peth on Saturday. Police are probing how he fell into the duct.

The fire brigade led by station officer Prakash Gore removed the body of the deceased identified as Shabbir M. Yahyabhai Gilletwala (65) from the duct around 12.30 pm Saturday. Gore said, “We got a call from police control room around 11.30 am about a body being spotted in the duct of the lift in Vishal Apartment. We reached the spot. It took us about an hour to remove the body.”

After some time, police learnt it was the body of Shabbir. Police said Gilletwala had come to a relative’s house on the fifth floor of the apartment on Thursday morning.

He left around 11.30 am to meet a relative at Raviwar Peth and had been missing since. His family came to know he did not visit their relative in Raviwar Peth. On Thursday evening, the family registered a complaint with Samartha police that he was missing.

Police suspect the “door of the lift could not be shut tightly as it was loose…” Shabbir is suspected to have opened the door and entered it believing he was stepping into the lift. Shabbir may have fallen down. When contacted, a family member said they, too, found no other reason behind the incident.

Police said they are probing various angles to confirm the cause of death.
