Anil Borkar (45) of Shivajinagar Gaothan,who worked as a driver with a tour operator and had been missing since January 2012,was murdered by a gang of criminals from Tamil Nadu,the Shivajinagar police said on Sunday.
The police have found evidence that Borkar was strangulated to death and and his body was dumped near Shindewadi on the Mumbai-Bangalore highway. The body had been found by the Pune rural police but since they could not ascertain the identity it was cremated.
Police said Borkar had gone to Mumbai on January 7. He had taken some passengers from Tamil Nadu,his relatives had told the police.
After Borkar went missing,said assistant inspector Mahesh Sartape,his employer had registered a complaint accusing him of fleeing with the car. Meanwhile,the Shivajinagar police got a call from the Tamil Nadu police after the latter had busted a gang of dacoits and recovered a car,which turned out to be the one that had gone missing.
The police asked for the custody of one of the suspects,Devmani Sanugam,who was arrested by the Tamil Nadu police. His interrogation revealed that Borkar owed him Rs 6 lakh and was not returning the money. To recover the money,they had taken him and the car along with them. They killed him and dumped his body near Shindewadi, said Sartape. Borkars relatives identified his body from the photos.
Sanugam has been remanded in police custody till July 12.
