A 12-year-old girl from Beed district was allegedly sold to a folk dance centre near Chakan by her mother in May for Rs 1 lakh. She was also allegedly repeatedly raped by youths who had helped her mother. The incident came to light after the girl managed to escape from the centre and filed a police complaint with the help of a social organisation.

A complaint in this regard has been registered by social worker Aparna Dubey at Bundgarden police station against the girl’s mother, the owner of the folk dance centre, two youths Deepak Chakradhar and Datta and two others who helped the woman sell her daughter.

Police said the girl was studying in Class VII of a residential school in a district near Beed. In last week of May,when the girl had gone home for summer holidays, her mother left home for some time and sent three youths — Chakradhar and two others — to meet the girl.

As per the complaint,Chakradhar raped the girl as the other two stood outside the home. He told her that she had been sold to a folk dance centre near Pune. After 10 days,Datta,Shiva and a woman named Sangeeta, who owns the centre, took her to a folk dance centre in Sablewadi,Khed.

The staffer got in touch with a police officer, who informed a social organisation in Pune. On Sunday, she managed to escape from the centre and came to Pune station where she met the social workers.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Ramnath Pokale said,“We have registered a case under sections for rape, abduction and wrongful confinement. As the incident happened under Chakan police station jurisdiction,we have transferred the case to them for further probe.”

Chakan police have launched a probe and detained Shiva. Teams have been formed to probe the case, said an officer.
